The Power of Facebook
In my last article, You Live by the Sword You die by the Sword, I talked about Facebook as it relates to the small business owner. In this writeup, I share with you my own personal story about how the power of Facebook can affect our lives in a positive light. WARNING! This article will contain a selfie – Not the solo self serving selfie – but the good kind!
I was closing down my storage unit at U-Haul. When I arrived at the location I realized that I lost my key to the lock. I asked the front desk for some help and they advised me that the lock they sold me cannot be cut by bolt cutters. Their solution: A locksmith. I did a face-palm move, cringed and walked out with my head hanging low.
Upon returning to my office, I called a few locksmiths and soon learned that the charge could be anywhere from $50.00 to $80.00 dollars and up. I then had the thought …wait a minute…I should check You Tube!
(West Bay Media Group Factoid: You Tube is currently the second most used search engine!)
I ended up watching videos on how to pick this specific lock. As an entrepreneur, lock-picking is not on my skill-set list. Then duh, it hit me again! Time to send out the clarion call to my Facebook network. Immediately, friends such as Rick Steuart – master pianist (check out his Music here) offered his lock-picking skills, and Dave “It just don’t matter” Harrill recommended I call Jerry Culp at Ace Hardware. Jerry is a great guy who took the time to drive over and assist me in trying to crack my lock on his own time…for Free! While Jerry was challenged with the lock , Mike Wise, one of the higher-ups at U-Haul, just happened to be on site, and, after identifying me as a legitimate storage leasee, drilled the lock out for free of charge!
As we were conversing, I informed Mike (U-Haul) about Jerry’s services. Both Mike and Jerry struck up a conversation with each other which lead to Mike possibly storing a few of his rental trucks over on the Ace parking lot. I call that the win-win-win!!!
One more small issue remained to be resolved. I now needed to purchase a new lock for $12.00 bucks but keeping in mind that this price was still WAY lower than $50.00 plus. When I walked into the U-Haul office to lament my second sob story, the manager replied to me that today was my lucky day. A former customer left their lock for someone else to use, and I turned out to be that “someone else” – FREE OF CHARGE!
So, the moral of the story? Facebook saved me up to $80.00. In the process, I was supported by good people whose sole interests were to help me, and to think that just a few years ago this was not even possible. The speed of Facebook is AMAZING, and, as a small business owner, it can be a tremendous tool in creating superior service and value for your client.
